Dr Hung Sze Wan Research Assistant Professor

Biography

Dr. Hung is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).She has made significant contributions to translational women's health research, particularly through the development of novel therapeutics for endometriosis and related gynaecological disorders.

With a unique interdisciplinary background bridging pharmaceutical science and clinical application, Dr. Hung employs integrated methodologies spanning bioinformatics, chemical proteomics, in vitro cellular assays, and in vivo animal models to elucidate disease mechanisms and identify therapeutic targets. Her pioneering work on ProEGCG, a novel prodrug of green tea catechin EGCG, has demonstrated superior efficacy and safety profiles through comprehensive preclinical studies. Ongoing clinical trials are positioning this therapeutic for clinical translation. She has also advanced AI-guided drug repurposing strategies through collaborations, enabling rapid identification and validation of novel therapeutic candidates for endometriosis. Her current research focus includes investigating central nervous system mechanisms underlying pain associated with endometriosis and menstrual disorders.

Dr. Hung has published 20 articles in international peer-reviewed journals, including 7 first-author papers featured in prestigious journals such as Advanced Science, Journal of Pharmaceutical Analysis, Journal of Pineal Research, and Medicinal Research Reviews. She has presented her research findings at over 15 international conferences, including the World Congress on Endometriosis and the European Society of Human Reproduction. Her projects have received support from competitive external grants totalling HK$3.73 million.

Research Interest(s)

  1. Development and clinical translation of novel therapies for women's health
    Research focuses on natural products and traditional Chinese medicine pharmaceutical development for women's health, with particular emphasis on non-hormonal treatment options for endometriosis and menstrual pain. Comprehensive preclinical approaches leverage bioinformatics and AI-driven methodologies, in vitro and in vivo models to elucidate molecular mechanisms and therapeutic targets. Clinical trials are designed and implemented to evaluate safety, pharmacokinetics, and efficacy of treatments in patients.
  2. Molecular pathophysiology and biomarker discovery
    Integrated multi-omics approaches including proteomics, genomics, and transcriptomics are employed to understand the mechanisms driving disease progression in gynaecological disorders. Through systematic investigation of cellular and molecular mechanisms, we aim to identify novel diagnostic biomarkers and precision therapeutic targets.
  3. Knowledge transfer of women's health therapeutics
    Translating scientific discoveries into real-world clinical impact through strategic drug development and regulatory pathway.
