Special conditions that require specialist care:
- Vaginal agenesis
This refers to congenital absence of vagina. This condition is also known as Mullerian aplasia or Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser syndrome. It is usually accompanied by cervical and uterine agenesis. These girls/women usually have normal secondary sexual development and often present with primary amenorrhoea. Nevertheless 5% of them have rudimentary uterine horn with functional endometrium inside; but it is obstructed. They may present with cyclical pelvic pain secondary to haematometra, haematosalpinx or endometriosis.
Non- surgical treatment with vaginal dilation is the first line therapy. It is highly successful with excellent patient’s satisfaction. A normal sexual life is possible after neo-vagina is created. If vaginal dilation therapy is needed, a dedicated doctor or nurse will teach the girl/woman. This treatment can be completed in few weeks.
- Vaginal obstruction
Some girls may have vaginal obstruction or partial vaginal obstruction and leading to severe abdominal or pelvic pain.
After evaluation, they may require vaginal reconstructive surgery. And some of them may need vaginal dilation therapy after the operation.
Combined DSD Clinic: We provide conjoint assessment for girls suffered from Disorders of Sexual Development (DSD) with Department of Paediatrics, Department of Surgery, Department of Psychiatry and Clinical Psychologists
